AWHONN Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Course

The Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring Course is a one-day workshop focusing on the application of advanced fetal heart monitoring knowledge and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. It is designed by AWHONN for experienced registered nurses and physicians who have successfully completed the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring course and builds on the essential knowledge and skills gained through that course and years of caring for perinatal families.

COURSE EMPHASIS
1. Maternal -fetal physiology related to complex FHR tracings
2. Interpretation
3. Intervention
4. Verbal and written communication techniques
5. Perinatal risk-management principles

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Describe physiologic principles of the pregnant patient’s and fetus’s oxygen transfer as they apply to principles of fetal heart monitoring.
2. Appraise the fetal response to the pregnant person’s pathological and physiological adaptations during the labor process.

***The course includes a MANDATORY online posttest that must be passed with a score of 80% or better to earn contact hours and CME. This Post-Test must be completed online within 30 days after the course. Participants should review the AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles & Practices, 6th edition, NICHD nomenclature, and their Intermediate course outline/notes in preparation for this course. The AWHONN FHM Principles & Practices 6th edition can be purchased at AWHONN.org.

Target Audience: Participants should have at least 2-3 years of experience using fetal heart monitoring technology in an intrapartum setting and have successfully completed the AWHONN Intermediate course.
